Danube Conference 2019

Veranstaltung  Donnerstag, 31. Oktober 2019

Danube Conference 2019 "Globalization, Geopolitics and Brexit: Potential prospects of action for the Danube Region"

Global linkages in commerce, economy, and tourism, as well as in environmental, education, technology, labor, cultural and media sectors have rapidly increased. Particularly after the end of state socialism, a sort of globalization euphoria emerged. Geopolitics, by contrast, has returned to the scene after almost twenty years, marking increasingly conflicting interests and a renewed polarization between major and regional powers such as the EU, USA, Russia, China, Turkey, and others. The prognosis of Brexit weakening the EU as a global player in the long term currently appears to be reliable. As currently nationalism, right-wing populism, and isolationist tendencies reinvigorate, calls are getting louder for a reorientation of Europe.

The Danube Conference 2019 thus seeks to discuss the opportunities and risks of all these developments for the Danube region. What prospects for joint, cross-border actions in politics, economy, science, education, technology, culture and civil society can be developed and applied in order to achieve more integrative and prosperous living conditions in the whole Danube Region?
