Multi-use hedgerow field trip
on 7th June 2021 from 14:00 in Höbersdorf, Lower Austria
Hedges ensure that the fertile topsoil is protected from wind erosion and improve the microclimate. This is becoming increasingly important as an adaptation to climate change. They provide habitats for insects, birds and mammals, thereby promoting biodiversity and beneficial insects.
Multi-use hedges are created to provide additional benefits to the farm beyond these positive effects. A typical example is the use of (wild)fruits and nuts. We visit existing multi-use hedges on the Binder farm and analyze them together with the farm manager with regard to benefits, biodiversity and protective functions.
Other uses of multi-use hedges will also be discussed. Multi-use hedges are a proven agroforestry system suitable for Central European agricultural and climatic conditions.
Date: Monday, 7th June 2021, Start: 14:00
Cost: free of charge
Meeting point: At the wayside shrine between Höbersdorf and Untermallebarn (L1089), 2011 Höbersdorf. Parking in the field path
Compulsory registration (Cklick here to register) until 4th June 2021
Max. Number of participants: 50 persons

Water efficient arable farming
3-day seminar on 15th, 16th and 23rd June 2021 in Essling, Vienna
Due to global warming, more frequent extreme weather events are expected. This poses major challenges for agriculture because on the one hand, water is becoming a scarce resource and on the other, intensive precipitation events with severe soil erosion are expected. These changing conditions make it all the more necessary to bring soils to their best possible condition.
In a three-day seminar, measures are discussed that increase the water absorption and water storage capacity of soils and help to avoid unnecessary water losses. The interrelationships of soil-plant-water balance and climate will be explained in a practice-oriented way with show objects, practical exercises, field experiments and best practice examples.
Here you can find the preliminary program.
Date: 15th, 16th and 23rd June 2021, at 9:00 to 17.30 each day
Location: Bio Forschung Austria, 1220 Vienna, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134
Cost: € 240 pro person (sponsored), € 480 unsponsored
For further information please contact us.
Compulsory registration for all three days (Click here to register).
Max. Number of participants: 15 persons

Field day "Closing cycles" - biogas slurry from clover fallow: optimal utilization in autumn
on 17th June 2021 in Gars am Kamp, Lower Austria from 14:00 to 17:00
How can I use the nutrients of clover fallows in livestock-free arable farming? In Gars am Kamp, organic farmers have joined forces for the joint production of biogas. Electricity and heat are produced from clover grass in the biogas plant. The nitrogenous residual products biogas slurry (liquid) and press cake (solid) are returned to the fields as fertilizer. A field trial at Robert Schneider is investigating the potential for utilizing biogas slurry in autumn.
How can nutrient losses be minimized?
Accompanying balances are made: What is the benefit of this cooperation?
What does the CO2 balance look like?
Meeting Point: Biogasproduktions GmbH & Co KG, Wienerstrasse Parzelle 721, 3571 Gars am Kamp (at the biogas plant on the eastern outskirts of Gars am Kamp). Open-air event
The event takes place within the framework of the project „Closing loops - recycling through return, transfer or use of organic by-products on the farm" which is funded by the federal government, the states and the EU. Therefore, participation is free of charge.
Compulsory registration: (Click here to register).
Max. Number of participants: 50 persons
Valid proof of negative Corona test, vaccination or survived disease required at registration on site.

No fear of the field thistle
on 29th June 2021 in Essling, Vienna
Field thistle is the terror of many organic farmers. It does not have to be, but you should know about the plant and its characteristics, be aware of the causes of thistle and know well the effect of previous management on the soil and the site characteristics of the field.
Date: 29th June 2021, from 08:00 to 12:30
Location: Bio Resarch Austria, 1220 Vienna, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134
Cost: € 20 per person (sponsored), € 80 unsponsored
Compulsory registration (Click here to register).
Max. Number of participants: 15 persons.
Valid proof of negative Corona test, vaccination or survived disease required at registration on site.

Field day "Closing loops": Transfer mulch and composting/microbial carbonization
on 30.06.2021 in Schachendorf and Rechnitz/Burgenland
Transfer mulch („Cut & Carry") and composting can recycle unused organic byproducts into fertilizer or mulch material for their own operations. Josef Jugovits reports on his positive experiences with these methods.
On a field test to "Cut & Carry", we are investigating the potentials in terms of fertilizer effect and soil water balance. A composting trial compares the effects of different conservation methods, such as microbial carbonization alongside classic composting and compositions of composts.
Meeting Point: Race Club, Gewerbepark 29, 7471 Rechnitz, from 10:00 to 13:00. partly open air event
The event takes place within the framework of the project „Closing loops - recycling through return, transfer or use of organic by-products on the farm" which is funded by the federal government, the states and the EU.
Therefore, participation is free of charge.
