MOUNTAIN ASH (ROWAN) AND SERVICE TREE
(Sorbus aucuparia var. edulis / Sorbus domestica)

Varieties:

All mountain ash varieties are edible, although many are bitter. Sweet varieties: 'Bursinka',
'Rossica Major', both frost resistant up to -45 °C. Service Tree: 'Sossenheimer Riesen' and several local varieties (image), frost resistant up to -23 °C.



Growth habit and height:

Trees, can be grown with several stems, up to 15 m tall.



Location

Mountain ash: humid soils. Service tree: sunny, also dry.



Uses

Mountain ash: August - September, Service tree: edible only when completely soft. Fresh, jam, preserves.
