Soil Health in the Danube Region:
Soil data, mapping, monitoring, awareness and demonstration in the context of the EU Strategie for the Danube Region (EUSDR) and the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe

Observation of spatial and temporal pattern of soil properties has a long tradition in most countries of the Danube region and other parts of Europe. The initial focus on mapping genetic soil units (e.g., soil types) and related aspects of soil fertility has to be broadend to adress also other soil and ecosystem services. At global and European level, a holistic soil health framework is under discussion, and may ultimately lead to European soil health legislation. Monitoring frameworks for soil health indicators, related pedotransfer functions, and emerging techniques such as satellite imaging for mapping of soils provide new opportunities to develop more accurate, regularly updated, multi-purpose soil information.

The 30^th Conference of the Working Group Sustainability / Soilprotection of the Working Community of the Danube Regions will provide a forum for scientists and professionals to discuss the soil health indicator framework and related monitoring activities, as well as soil mapping techniques at national and European scale, with emphasis on the Danube region. Moreover, changing demands for multi-purpose soil maps and information, such as soil data required for supporting spatial information on soil and ecosystem services, soil health policy, including legislation and incentive programmes, will be discussed during the conference.
We welcome contributions addressing one or more aspects of soil health assessment, including methodology, case studies and best practice examples.
